What is HealthChoices?

In 2015, Pennsylvania increased access to publicly funded healthcare insurance by establishing a Medicaid expansion program called HealthChoices. This program, which falls under the supervision of the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) provides funding for medical treatment and certain behavioral healthcare services, including rehab, for individuals who do not have insurance and who meet certain criteria.

The following are examples of Pennsylvania residents who may be eligible to have their addiction rehab funded through the HealthChoices program:

  • Children and adolescents (up to age 20)
  • Adults ages 20 to 64 who are at or below 138% of the federal poverty level
  • Pregnant women
  • Some women who have breast and/or cervical cancer
  • Adults aged 65 and older
  • People with certain disabilities, including blindness

The behavioral healthcare component of HealthChoices is managed by the DHS Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. The program divides the state into five zones, with each zone including several counties. White Deer Run of Lehigh is authorized to provide rehab services to individuals who meet the HealthChoices eligibility requirements and who are residents of the following counties:

  • Berks
  • Cambria
  • Dauphin
  • Franklin / Fulton
  • Lackawanna / Susquehanna
  • Lehigh
  • Luzerne
  • Montgomery
  • Schuylkill
  • Washington
  • Wyoming
  • York / Adams

If your county is not included in the list above, this does not mean that you will not be able to access behavioral healthcare benefits through HealthChoices. White Deer Run of Lehigh is one of 16 treatment centers in the White Deer Run Treatment Network. Please call us at your convenience and we will be happy to identify another White Deer Run center that is authorized to provide care to HealthChoices recipients in your county.
